Known for his tough role as Chief Choi in the hit film ‘Extreme Job’, actor Song Young Kyu has passed away. The Yongin Dongbu Police Station in Gyeonggi province confirmed that the actor was discovered deceased on 4 August.
Found inside his car
As reported by Soompi, He was discovered inside a car in a residential complex in Yongin, around 8 a.m. KST, by an acquaintance who then alerted the police. The authorities shared that there were no signs of foul play, and no note was found at the scene. Police are now speaking to his family to understand more about the recent events leading up to his passing. They are also considering whether to perform an autopsy to find out the exact cause.
DUI incident in June
Before his passing, the actor was under the spotlight for a drunk driving case, on 19 June, Song Young Kyu was caught driving under the influence. He drove about 5 kilometres while drunk in Yongin, the same area where he lived. He was then referred to the prosecution. Though the incident happened in June, it only became public a month later in late July. This brought a wave of backlash and led to major changes in his professional life.
Stepped down from major play
Once the public found out about his drunk driving, the actor stepped down from the stage production of ‘Shakespeare In Love’, where he was set to play a key role. Soon after, producers of other projects started distancing themselves from the actor. Two shows, ‘The Defects’ and ‘The Winning Try’—announced that they would edit out his scenes as much as possible.
His role in ‘Extreme Job’
Song Young Kyu was best known for his supporting role in the 2019 hit film ‘Extreme Job’, where he played a tough but memorable squad chief. The film was a box office success and his performance was praised by both viewers and critics. Though often cast in supporting roles, Song had a strong presence and left a lasting impression with his work.
