CORK, IRELAND – With summer temperatures on the rise, Agria Ireland is urging pet owners to be vigilant against heatstroke in cats and dogs. The expert-backed guidance reminds pet parents that heatstroke is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt attention.
Spot the Signs Early:
- Cats may show rapid panting, red or dry gums, restlessness, lethargy, excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, or collapse
- Dogs can exhibit heavy panting, bright-red gums, elevated heart rate, breathing difficulties, vomiting, diarrhoea, anxiety, confusion, convulsions, and even unconsciousness
Immediate First Aid Steps:
- Move your pet to a cooler environment—ideally shaded or air-conditioned
- Cool them gradually with lukewarm water (avoid ice-cold water to prevent shock)
- Contact your veterinarian immediately; heatstroke is a medical emergency
Prevention Is Key:
- Ensure constant access to shade, fresh water, and cool surfaces.
- Avoid high-risk periods—dogs should be walked early morning or late evening; cats benefit from cool indoor spots
- Older pets, overweight animals, flat-faced breeds, kittens, and cats with respiratory issues are particularly vulnerable
